RANDY KOHRS Now It's Empty Randy Kohrs was first introduced to stringed instruments in Iowa when he was eight years old. Randy's uncle pulled out a guitar and produced magic; for the boy, the musical die was cast. Enchanted by the sounds, he headed off into an exploration that continues to fascinate him today. On the way, Randy has developed into an emotionally expressive vocalist with a sparkling clear tenor voice. In his performances he presents a variety of material that carries the listener along on journeys ranging from bouncing enthusiasm through numbing heartache, from the top edge of good mood to the cold bottom of a broken heart, and then back up again. His mastery of different forms of strings and wood include: acoustic and electric dobro, acoustic and electric guitar (low and alternatively tuned), lap steel, straight steel, pedal steel, Hawaiian slide guitar, bottleneck blues guitar, mandolin, banjo, upright bass, and tenor acoustic guitar; but such a list can't describe the effortless ease and artistry of his play. As Randy moves from one instrument to another, it is clear pure joy and love for what he does fuels his own wizardry. LISTEN - MP3 Clip! You Never Cared About Me |

GRETA LEE You Must Be Present To Win "Atlanta-based Greta Lee plays country music that is simple but by no means simplistic. There's a direct and unadorned quality to her songs and her vocals project an appealing combination of grittiness and softness. Lee, who has drawn comparisons to Roseanne Cash, shows with her winning second full length that she deserves more recognition of her own." -Miles of Music "Atlanta's sweetheart has the voice of a honky-tonk angel and a gift for writing songs that recall the golden age of country music." -Atlanta Journal/Constitution "Stone country and proud of it, Lee writes and sings the kind of emotionally riveting, touched-by-the-truth songs that are sorely lacking on mainstream country radio. The only song Lee didn't write on this album is a honky-tonk take on Johnny Russell's "Got No Reason Now For Goin' Home," which was a Top 10 single for Gene Watson in 1985. Sometimes the most simple lyrics ("It would have been easier if you just stayed in love/but you changed your heart, changed your mind/and now I'm just dyin/and I'm gonna die tryin' gettin' over you") are spellbinding when delivered with Lee's aching sincerity. At times she brings to mind Mary Chapin Carpenter with her witty wordplay ("Everything's Changed," "Run With You") but vocally she's closer to Kelly Willis. Lee, however, transcends any comparisons with this album of songs that take an unflinching look at life's ups and downs. If the Nashville labels don't sign this Atlanta-based artist, they should at least snatch up her tunes. She's got something to say and she says it well." -Music Row Magazine LISTEN - MP3 Clip! GRETA LEE This Ain't Over Yet 1998 release. "Greta Lee creates the kind of bold, straight-from -the-heart songs that prove young country singers are capable of greater depth than Music Row believes possible. Singing in a rangy voice that merges the huskiness of Natalie Merchant with the sweet expressiveness of Kelly Willis, she performs self-penned songs that dig into disappointment and pain with tough-minded honesty...Lee comes on like the heir apparent of such intelligent country singers as Roseanne Cash andmary Chapin Carpenter." -Michael McCall LISTEN - MP3 Clip! MONTY and the PYTHONS Real Thing I had the distinct pleasure of running into Monty Holmes the other day, and as I have long been a fan of Monty's singing and writing, he brought me up to date on what he's been up to lately. First of all, some of you might remember him for some songs he has written such as Here Comes Never Again, Again for Leeann Womack, When Did You Stop Loving Me and I know She Still Loves Me for George Strait. The list goes on and on. Along with being a great writer, Monty Holmes is also a super country singer. Currently he has teamed up with three real pros to form the group Monty and the Pythons. collectively they are a group, not just a singer with a band. Super drummer Jeff Hale who worked with Tony Joe White and Waylon Jennings for years, Charlie Harrison who worked with Rod Stewart and Poco, and Billy Hillman who toured with too many artists to count. All Play an important part in making this group the real thing! In fact, the title of their brand new CD is The Real Thing. Produced by Jeff Hale and Monty Holmes, it really is the real thing. PINE MOUNTAIN RAILROAD Knoxville Train The band started in September 1998 after being volunteered to perform together. All of the members worked in the tourism/hospitality industry in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. The Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism heard of their individual musical talents and asked them to put something together for a convention in Milwaukee, WI. Reluctantly, they agreed to give it a try. At the first practice, their harmonies fell right in place, and the music clicked! Pine Mountain Railroad has gone from playing the street corners of Gatlinburg (they did this to practice performing in front of a crowd) to opening for The Charlie Daniel's Band at the annual 4th of July "Patriot Festival" in Pigeon Forge, TN before a crowd of 30,000 people. "With the Outlaws' verve and Loretta's easy grace, Rose draws on her East Tennessee roots and family history, while incorporating an alt-country penchant for distortion and strong backbeats. GENE WATSON From The Heart Gene Watson's heyday stretched from the mid 1970s to the late 1980s when hits like "Fourteen Carat Mind" proclaimed his gifts to the world. On this, his first new album in several years, Watson's burnished, searing voice remains a model of traditionalist integrity, one he and coproducer Ray Pennington ably apply to a mix of material. "Next to Nothin'" mixes longing, pain, and anxiety in a package worthy of (or perhaps too good for) radio airplay. Watson's versatility remains an asset. His sweetly romantic side embraces "She Had Me," balanced by the acerbically witty "No Trash in My Trailer." "Would It Be Cheatin'" equals any contemporary power ballad. It's no surprise that Watson makes both Boudleaux Bryant's classic ballad "Take Me As I Am or Let Me Go" and Lefty Frizzell's "I Never Go Around Mirrors" his own. With pedal steel great Buddy Emmons making a rare recording-session appearance, Watson reveals himself equal to anyone in today's Top 10. --Rich Kienzle TRACK LISTING: Next To Nothin' / She Had Me / The Man An' Me And You / Rose In The Sand / When You're Not Looking Back / This Circus That You Call A Rodeo / The Truth Is I Lied / Would It Be Cheatin' / Drivin' Me Sane / Take Me As I Am Or Let Me Go / No Trash In My Trailer / I Never Go Around Mirrors LISTEN - MP3 Clip! JOHN WILLIAMSON self-titled John's self-titled debut album establishes him firmly as the type of writer Nashville needs, rooted strongly in tradition, but with a unique perspective from living life his own way. His first single, "The Man Who Let a Memory Take Him Down", is supporting evidence of this fact. The song relates the tale of a broken-hearted lover whose inability to forgive himself for past mistakes threatens to bring him to his knees. The lyrics paint a picture of a desperate soul, while John's soft, melodic guitar playing and smooth, easy-timbred voice soothe the pain the listener is sure to feel. Other tracks on the album give credit to John's interesting take on life, both happy and sad. "Where Does a Cowboy Go" is a bouncy romp through the day to day adventures of America's last free spirit. "That's All I Ask" lists the simple pleasures that make a country boy smile. And "Handouts, Hopes and Prayers" is an inside look at what takes place in the mind of a less fortunate person forced to live on the street. LISTEN - MP3 Clip! I Might Say Anything |
