BLEU EDMONDSON The Band Plays On "On the new record, entitled "The Band Plays On", the band played every instrument with the exception of Riley Osbourn on piano and B3, and Lloyd Maines on a variety of instruments. Bleu also enlisted the help of Terri Hendrix once again and talented singer Ruthie Foster on backing vocals. Bleu was also able to co-write with legendary honky-tonker Clay Blaker and Rusty Wier, who sings on the new release too. Utilizing the vast musical input of the band, they also recorded a Harry Connick, Jr. song along with another song written by Matt Powell. "This record is one that the band and I are extremely proud of," Bleu says, "hopefully people will think not only that it is good but that it is different too." LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Southland |

DICKIE LEE ERWIN Texas Midnight Highway "Dickie Lee Erwin is a singer a fine songwriter a precious soul a master of the desert scene. I believe in him." -Alejandro Escovedo Dickie Lee Erwin's musical history spans as far back as the 70s, playing with an eclectic assortment of musicians and playing an eclectic variety of music. A time considered by many to be the halcyon for Austin music and musicians. A time when the rent was cheap and a collective spirit of creativity and various genres of music flourished. From his 1980s' award winning bluegrass band Erwin Prather, mid1980s' band Seven Samarai (Ronnie Lane's original Austin acoustic band) on to his nationally syndicated performance on The Texas Connection, Erwin continues. After touring with the great Dallas punkgrass band Killbilly, Erwin went on to release his own CD "There's a Movie Goin' On" and has just finished his new CD "Texas Midnight Highway," a must listen for everyone. Presently Erwin is performing in and around Austin and central Texas. His gospel/bluegrass band The Altered Boys and the rompin Dickie Lee Erwin Band is preparing to tour this spring and summer supporting his new album. LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Motherlode |

The Flatlanders More A Legend Than A Band This pioneering all-acoustic roots-country album was recorded in 1972 and originally released only on 8-track! The band's ensemble sound recalled pre-war country, but the lyrics were utterly contemporary. Two Jimmie Dale Gilmore classics "Dallas" and "Tonight I'm Gonna Go Downtown," were heard here first, as were some early Butch Hancock songs. It's hardly surprising that this album has taken on a legendary status. Alternately evoking the raw, sensual poetry of Lucinda Williams and the delicate melodic instincts of Aimee mann, Flatt delivers one winning tune after another, drawing equal inspiration from rock, pop, folk and honky-tonk. CHRISSY FLATT Wings of a Butterfly Blends the organic soul of country and folk with the energy and hooks of 60's pop. Chrissy was born in Austin, TX in 1969. The youngest of three girls, she lost her father, who passed away from heart failure at age 61, when she was only four years old. His death had a devastating effect on her childhood which has informed her music with a powerful sense of solitude and loss. After her father's passing, her family moved to the notoriously eccentric bible-belt town of Waco, TX. Life in Waco as a social misfit turned her inward to a protective shell where music increasingly became her best friend. The music she turned to in those days -- childhood folk songs, Buddy Holly, David Bowie and punk rock records her sisters brought home, beach music and girl groups from the a.m. radio remain important influences today. Chrissy's family moved to San Antonio in her early teens after two years in Flagstaff, AZ. It was at this time she made her first forays into music under the spell of the legendary San Antonio underground punk scene first tryng drums, then electric guitar. After acquiring an acoustic guitar and some lessons she began to find her way to the music she writes and plays today. LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Sweetheart of Waco |

RON FLYNT L.A. Story 2005 solo album from 20/20 bassist! "an astonishing piece; as a document of exceptional power pop; as a coherent concept album and as a literal and metaphorical take of survival in the music business. Joined by his original 20/20 partner Steve Allen and `90s drummer Bill Belknap, Flynt makes the same kind of brainy, breezy yet darkly-lined pop that established his reputation two decades ago. From the twangy roots of "Waiting to the jangly guitar swing of "Hollywood Life to the soul drenched moan of "Southern Belles, Flynt has created a marvelously evocative pop record that tells a linear story of a band struggling to make it in a nasty business while devising its songs/chapters as impressive tracks that stand alone as great tunes, without the concept to prop them up. To those of us who revere 20/20s pop greatness, Ron Flynt didnt have a thing to prove, and L.A. Story is proof of that."-Amplifier. FORTYTWENTY Lowdown and Dirty Forty Twenty, a five piece band that hails from Lincoln Nebraska sings mostly of cowboys and hippies. They're relatively unknown in to most outside of their region but with sporadic tour dates with the Stragglers they'll be exposed to a much larger audience and eventually into the open arms of Texas Music fans. David Wilson fronts Forty Twenty and are backed by a solid group of players including Lern Tilton on bass, J.J. King on drums, Lloyd McCarter on pedal-steel, and Jon Bradley on lead guitar. The band's sound is distinct and almost a roadhouse honky-tonk sound for lack of a more "defined genre." Wilson shares writing credits with Tilton each pinning five cuts (Tilton the odd cuts, Wilson the even). The band's sound (best described as Buck Owens meets Jason Boland) that can only be described as short of phenomenal is a welcome breath of air in a country music market that's cluttered with just about any dime store cowboy that a record executive can find in a bar. FOUR MILE MULE Hateful The follow up effort to their successful debut, Black and White Movie, this 13 song CD has pure, raw Alt-Country offerings. Described as "one of the last true rock bands" by dallasmusic.com, Four Mile Mule combines early influences such as Johnny Cash with the modern sounds of The Wallflowers and The Counting Crows. "Lou Vargo leads Four Mile Mule back out on the musical road, spinning rough 'n' tumble Americana tales. They "hit the town running", to borrow a song title, from Louisiana backroads up to Helana's main street. Songs like the blistering rock boogie of "Shotgun", the mournful, country-flavored "Greenville" and a rugged rendition of "Outdoor Life" provide listeners with much to love on Hateful." -MoM LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Today I Started Loving You Again One of the greatest albums in Austin music history - Austin Chronicle It would be difficult to over-praise Freda and the Firedogs. - Austin American Statesman From the beginning, there wasn't much in the way of expectations. Freda and the Firedogs were just glad to have a gig. There is no evidence they shook the world, other than the fact Marcia Ball aka Freda went on to carve out quite an impressive career as a blues singer and pianist. The original Freda and the Firedog tapes had long ago burned up in a fire in Atlantic's vaults. The only existing copy was in Jerry Wexler's library, which he happily offered, even though he couldn't help reminding Smith what could've been. Who knows what would have, could have been? I sure don't. But what I do know is that this recording--is it a demo? is it a polished album?--captures a band, a producer, a place and a time like nothing else could. Close your eyes, let your mind wander back thirty years and listen to what we all missed. LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Make Me a Pallet |

THE SHAKIN' APOSTLES (Freddie Steady) Tucson 1995 East Side Digital release. The Shakin' Apostles are Freddie Steady, John Inmon, Danny Thorpe and Ronnie Johnson with help from Cam King, Danny Levin. Wes McGee, Champ Hood, Ponty Bone, Lloyd Maines, Riley Osbourn, Bill Averbach and Sonny Collie. At first blink, a musical remake of "Zachariah" in '95 seems as probable as "Mad Max" being reprised for the surfboard demographic. But if Kevin Costner can stick his neck out...Freddie "Steady" Krc grabbed the reins, penned an original love/murder/desperado "electric western " set on the broad Southwestern stage of the late 19th century, then planted his Apostles in the orchestra pit. Krc, a Jerry Jeff Walker sideman and a former member of Roky Erickson & The Explosives, spins the tale of star-crossed lovers Sonny (the wandering cowboy) and Kara Lee (the Arizona heiress) amid some serious trash, twang and thunder. It's a diverse set--ominous, wah-wah flecked psychedelia ("Someone Following Me"), sweetly chiming janglepop ("Treasure of the Orient"). The cantina-lonely-as-the-ages vocal plus a haunting string arrangement brings to mind another talented Austinite, Alejandro Escovedo. Like Escovedo, Krc digs deep into the archetypal "Americana" motherlode and scoops up gleaming nugget after nugget. -Fred Mills / CD REVIEW LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Tucson |

FREDDIE STEADY'S WILD COUNTRY (Shakin' Apostles) Lucky 7 Wild country is just that. Country through and through yet, well, wild. The sounds of hot, sweaty Gulf Coast Texas, from the bar rooms to the bayous, city streets to back porches, yet all filtered through the iconoclastic talent of Freddie Steady Krc. When this mighty album was recorded in the mid-80s Freddie had already put behind him spells with New Wave almost-made-its the Explosives and Texan psychedelic guru Roky Erickson. Then he fled to England, assembled some of the nation's finest crossover musicians (devoted to country when not playing alongside the likes of John Cale, Bill Wyman, Bob Geldof and others) and made Lucky 7, aided by the engineer from the Sex Pistols' bombastic sessions. The result is, quite simply, stunning. Alt-country before anyone knew what that was (if, indeed, they do now). Country as rock 'n' roll, rock 'n' roll as country. A handful of well-chosen covers and a welter of Freddie originals, hummable, danceable classics from a time before he became a known Texan singer-songwriter with the thundering twang of his now band, the Shakin' Apostles. Listen to one of the most beautiful pure country songs you're ever likely to come across, (I Hear) Neon Angels Sing. The instrumental crash of Ride Through Wild Country (led by the album's producer, Brit guitar genius Wes McGee). The divine High Lonesome Country Soul (and real country soul it is, too). And then a host of out-and-out rockers, all pedal steel and fiddle and squeezebox and killer guitar. It's an album that's as new and exciting today as it was then. And with the added bonus of four extra tracks featuring Austin's high church of wayward country geniuses...Butch Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, pianist Floyd Domino, fiddler Alvin Crow and more. If you're not sweating and grinning by the end, it really is time to worry. -Nick Dalton MAVERICK MAGAZINE (UK) LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Say You'll Go |
