RANDY GARIBAY Monticello Sessions This remarkable CD, taped on a cassette recorder in George Prado's home in San Antonio's Monticello Park in the '80s, captures the beautiful and soulful joy of three San Antonio music legends - premeire bass player George Prado, vrtuoso violinist Sebastian Campesi and Randy Garibay, known as the Chicano Bluesman, who was also a gifted jazz vocalist and guitarist. Profits from this CD are donated through The Randy Garibay Legacy Fund, a non-profit organization, to San Antonio charities which serve homeless families, treat low income alcoholics and addicts, provide music education to children in the barrio, and generally enrich the lives of poor children and their families. The Randy Garibay Legacy Fund helps those that Randy cared so much about in his life. SCOTT GIBSON Make Ready "If you're in the mood for hot guitar pickin', killer melodies, vivid imagery and a sweet but gritty vocal performance-- And you're a fan of Joe Ely and Kevin Welch--check out Make Ready. Scott's an introspective Austin-based singer-songwriter. With this outstanding effort he also dabbles -- quite effectively-- in honky-tonk, blues and bluegrass. Don't miss the peppy "Sunday Social." -Country Music Today "Make Ready is one of the most auspicious debuts I've heard in many a year. COLIN GILMORE The Day the World Stopped and Spun the Other Way It will take only one listen to Colin Gilmore's excellent new CD "The Day The World Stopped And Spun The Other Way" to hear that he's got his own distinctive sound. It's a disc with a variety of influences and styles - like most great Texas singer/songwriters, he just can't stand in one place - but it all comes across in a way that is refreshing, wide-eyed and thoroughly listenable. Besides the musical mixed bag, what immediately hits you is a lyrical sophistication that belies Gilmore's relatively young age. "Every Tear" imagines the tough times his grandparents went through growing cotton in West Texas in the early part of the 20th Century, while "Good Times Stay" describes the universal desire for unending happiness. Colin is the son of renowned Texas singer and songwriter Jimmie Dale Gilmore. LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Good Times Stay |

MIKE GRAHAM Find You a Highway "Mike Graham manages to conjure up enough beer, babes, and bad boys to satisfy a whole bar full of the swig-and-swagger crowd. He's also a good songwriter and singer with enough solid back-up support to rise above most of the crowded Texas field of singer-songwriters. On this strong follow-up to 1999's Just West of Nowhere, producer Larry Joe Taylor brings in Davin James (electric, acoustic, and baritone guitars, and harmony vocals), Chris Schlotzhauer (pedal and lap steel guitars, dobro), John Inmon (electric lead guitar and hormony vocals), Zack Taylor (percussion), Mark Fishback (bass guitar), Mark Webernick (piano) and Mike Gregory (organ). Graham does the vocals and rattler; I assume that's the musical instrument, not the snake. Graham shares a strong sense of place and a storytelling nostalgia for the rapidly fading, restless, romanticized lifestyle of rural America. Find You a Highway is a strong entry into the rapidly growing, not-so-subtle Texas country version of Americana." -Tom Geddie LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Be Alright |

GREEZY WHEELS Millennium Greezy "On October 16, sixteen years after laying down the first tracks and twenty-three years after our final live performance at the original Soap Creek Saloon, Greezy Wheels released an album. It's called 'Millennium Greezy,' and it's on Tana Records. And, oh yeah, it's our first album in twenty-five years. Though it might never have come about had Sweet Mary not been stricken with breast cancer late last year [she's doing GREAT-- and is done with all her treatments!], it all actually began with Jan Beeman's gift of six hours of free time at Music Lane Studio in 1985. The project continued through the mid eighties with $5 an hour rates at Ken Avant's Saturn Sound Studio, and culminated this year in more free recording time given to Sweet Mary by Freddie and Lisa Fletcher at Arlyn Studio. With incalculable help from patron saints Kinky Friedman, Don Imus, Eddie Wilson and 'Hair Care King' John McCall, Greezy Wheels has come full wheel in the new millennium. The CD is dedicated to the late 'Mambo' John Treanor, who recorded some of his last (and we think best!) work on it, along with no less than twenty-three of Austin's finest players. In Mambo's memory, money will be donated from each sale to both the SIMS Foundation and the Kenneth Threadgill Foundation, to help promote a Texas musicians' healthcare network. Mastered on Friday the 13th, July, 2001, Millennium Greezy has thirteen tracks --- and the magic is back. Get Greezy! ". . . Cleve, Mary, and Lissa LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Sideman's Party |

GRUPO FANTASMA Comes Alive (note-THIS CD IS ONLY AVAILABLE ON THIS SITE, AND AT LIVE SHOWS) Dubbed “one of the all-time great Texas dance bands” by Pop Culture Press, the 11-man Latin music Juggernaut known as Grupo Fantasma is considered by many to be the most exciting group to emerge from the formidable Austin, Texas music scene in the last couple of years. This summer the band is touring North America playing Hispanic music festivals, Canadian Folk Festivals, rock clubs and alternative music venues in the US and Canada building audiences as broad and diverse as their music. Who is Grupo Fantasma? “The best band in Austin,” says Austin Chronicle music critic Jim Caliguiri. “The only other band I’ve seen get that kind of audience reaction was the Ramones.” “We’re a hybrid of Latin dance music from old school to new school,” explains primary songwriter and percussionist, Jose Galeano, displaying a hint of humility. A raucous horde of musical wizards and freaks, they transform traditional Latin styles of music with their skillful songwriting, inventive arrangements and exuberant live shows. They fuse afro-latin funk, cumbia, hip-hop, salsa, merengue and more into an intoxicating whole. It’s a sound that demands audiences move - forget about chairs, don’t even think of sitting down when Grupo Fantasma is in town. Hailing from such far-flung places as New York City, Managua, Nicaragua, and Laredo, Texas, Fantasma consists of a versatile and talented cast of characters that includes a double rhythm section and four piece horn brigade. The band successfully obliterates the cliches that often plague the current Latin music market, all the while keeping their feet firmly planted in the traditions that they love and deeply respect.TRACK LISTING: Mentiras / Chocolate / Bailadores / Oye Mi Cumbia / Cocinando / Chronico 2000 / Sonido Campeon / Lupita / Vida Guerra / Dos Regalitos / Saca La Basura / Band Introductions / Rico Tumbro / Outro LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Ya No Puedo Movimiento Popular translates literally to popular movement which in Latin American countries means a grass-roots movement of or supported by the people. It is this attitude that best sums up the last few years of Grupo Fantasmas impressive existence. The band has avoided categorization and trends to become a completely independent musical force with which to be reckoned. Their first eponymous self-released album moved over 7,000 copies from the stage alone and landed them on internationally distributed compilations, a NPR special, and the soundtrack to critically acclaimed director John Sayles film Casa de los Babys. Their explosive live performances have packed some of the most reputable venues in the US and Mexico on word of mouth and industry hype alone, and the band has shared the stage with musical legends such as Los Lobos, Flaco Jimenez, Patti Smith, KRS-One, and Barbarito Torres from Buena Vista Social Club. Grupo Fantasmas new album, Movimiento Popular, has been a year in the making. Stuart Sullivan (Willie Nelson, Sublime, Butthole Surfers) was recruited to engineer, and Carl Thiel (Robert Rodriguez, Kill Bill II) was brought in to handle the mixing process. Special guest artists featured on the album include Raga El, who introduces the band in classic dancehall style, Tejano music legend Ruben Ramos (Los Super Seven), and DMC champion DJ Baby G, who contributed to a track on Fantasmas first album. The spectrum of sounds on Movimiento Popular highlight Spanish language vocals and four piece horns anchored by a dynamic percussion and rhythm section. From the jarring new-school cumbia opener "Peligrosa" to the Fania-esque salsa of "Vida Guerra" to the classic Tejano feel of "Soy el Hombre," Grupo Fantasma represents a new generation of musicians who can reference slick Quincy Jones era production AND the grittiness of the Beastie Boys "Check Your Head." The band has successfully busted all barriers and cliches that often plague the current Latin music market, all the while keeping their feet firmly planted in the traditions that they respect and revere. The three of them set out consciously to make a less rootsy album than the kind Hall has become known for. They broke down and then rebuilt a dozen songs Hall had written over the previous few years, sometimes beginning with old analog drum machines, other times with a Wurlitzer piano, or an acoustic guitar. NATHAN HAMILTON & No Deal Live at John T. Floore Country Store, Helotes, Texas When people ask Hamilton what he does for a living, he usually says musician. Thats a pretty modest claim for a guy who won the prestigious Kerrville New Folk award in 2000, putting him in the company of past winners like Slaid Cleaves, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen. Tuscola, his 1999 solo debut, launched two charting Americana radio singles (Cash &Tobacco and Spent) and garnered an almost embarrassing amount of critical praise. Full of haunting images and evocative emotions, wrote ChrisRiemenschneider of the AustinAmerican-Statesman, while Christopher Hess of the Austin Chronicle hailed the album as a strong series of country-folk tunes that establish Hamilton as a local voice to be reckoned with. Sara Rex of KFAN Texas Rebel Radio singled it out as one of the best releases of the year. LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Two Penny Vengeance |

"Bottle In The Bathroom", a devastating domestic portrait, and the searing "Bed Clothes" number among the disc's standout tunes. TERRI HENDRIX The Art of Removing Wallpaper "The ever versatile and captivating Terri Hendrix runs through 12 new gems on her latest, The Art Of Removing Wallpaper. She offers a fluid mix of folk, pop, country and jazz-inflected roots music that seems to flow from her. Her soulful vocal delivery and song-styling displays a reliable consistency, and this time out she leaves no reason to think otherwise. She recounts the makings of a really bad day in the country/folk flavored "Breakdown", and ruminates on the quick passage of time in the bluesy "It's About Time". Some of the songs are co-penned with her long time musical associate and co-producer Lloyd Maines, including the gospel infused "Judgment Day", where she presents a strong statement against using the name of the "Big Guy Upstairs" to justify evil deeds. She also rails on the FCC and conglomerate monsters such as ClearCha**el in "Monopoly". She's fired up and not holding back. On a few more introspective tracks, like the moving cover of Jeff Barbra and Sarah Pirkle's contemplative "Quiet Me", she finds she's able to "slow down" and to "focus on what's really important: the beauty of life." -Miles of Music LISTEN - MP3 Clip! HILLBILLY IDOL Hillbilly Idol Hillbilly Idol's follow-up to Town and Country proves an altogether tasty smorgasbord of rootsy country, honky-tonk, Western swing, and newgrass. Smart, without being smart-alecky- even on the novelty number "Hillbilly Polka," a song about a guy with a thing for a squeezebox girl. Mix in some sophisticated humor and the fine duet vocals of founding members Dave Huddleston and Paul Kovac, and add some instrumental riffs that pay tribute to both country and rock influences, and you've got any album you'll be recommending to you friends and playing over and over again.- Alanna Nash TRACK LISTING: Smack Dab In The Middle Of Love / No Time Like The Past / I Don't Think About You Anymore / She Didn't Even Know I Was Gone / Four Brothers / Hillbilly Polka / Late In The Day / Dixie Highway Home / Fingertips / Between Here and Heaven and Gone / No More To Lose / Radio Flyer / One Step Forward / Hurt Heart Broke / Sirocco LISTEN - MP3 Clip! HILLBILLY IDOL Town & Country This impressive debut by Ohio's Hillbilly Idol is rooted in the honky tonk and western swing music of the '50s. The instrumentation is pure country. Paul Kovac lends a bluegrass feel on mandolin, while lead guitarist Dave Huddleston provides some tasteful solos. Especially impressive is steel guitarist Al Moss, particularly on the instrumental " Half Empty" which recalls Red Rhodes' work with Michael Nesmith and First National Band. Hillbilly Idol demonstates excellent songwriting and has a sound that mainstream country radio seems to no longer comprehend, but fans of real country will love. - Robert Wooldridge TRACK LISTING: It All Depends On You / Better Off Believin' / Straight To My Heart / By Now / The Ways Of The World / Mind To Change / There Ain't Nothin' In The World / Someone Before Me / Half Empty / When It Rains I Get Wet / If It Were Only Easy / Those Shoes / Blue From Now On LISTEN - MP3 Clip! JAMES HINKLE and TED RODDY Podnahs! The State of Texas has a well-deserved reputation for producing some of the finest musicians on the planet. What exactly causes this phenomenon is a mystery. Perhaps it is the culture, or maybe just something in the water. Whatever the reason, Texas has always been a place where musical ideas are exchanged freely and artists frequently collaborate with each other on side projects that offer a musical release outside of their regular gig. This new recording from Fort Worth hombre James Hinkle and longtime Austin staple Ted Roddy is one such project. Despite both having busy solo careers, Hinkle & Roddy have pooled their talents to produce a recording that draws heavily on different forms of Texas music with some very satisfying results. The leadoff tune on the recording is a soulful cover of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "Cuttin' In" featuring some solid vocal and guitar work from Hinkle. The next tune, "Love Time" is an up-tempo number showcasing Roddy's honky tonk influenced vocals. Continuing the albums eclectic nature is the tune "To Have and Not Hold" which has a Tex-Mex feel to it. Hinkle gets a chance to flaunt his guitar chops on the jazzy "B.J.'s Bounce" before trotting out some wicked wah-wah guitar on the funky "Strange Things Happening." Two highlights of the recording are "Outside Chance" a moody, atmospheric piece written by Hinkle that recalls some of Mark Knopfler's better work. The final tune on the album is the acoustic swing of "Be-Bopping the Boogie" which takes elements of western swing, jazz and blues and rolls them into one very enjoyable tune. James Hinkle and Ted Roddy have succeeded in producing a recording that is fun to listen to and will appeal equally to fans of blues, rock and country. Let's hope that these two veteran musicians plan to reunite and make some more music together sometime soon. -Barry T. Gober LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Cuttin' In |

JAMES HINKLE Running Too Hard "...mixes good ol' Texas blues with New Orleans horns, Tex-Mex flavorings and some straight-up rock 'n' roll. It's sort of like Hinkle threw his guitar in the back seat and went on a tour of his favorite Lone Star bars, leaping onstage to sit in with every band he encountered. "...includes guest appearances by Marcia Ball, Ted Roddy, and Edd Lively, is a strong CD, with good playing and singing throughout. Hinkle sounds at home no matter what he's doing, be it pure-Texas blues or songs that would sound right, whether down on the border or on Bourbon Street at 3 a.m. He's proud of the CD, and he should be.
