I Pray For You My Friend This CD fulfills a hope that many of us have for Texas Music and that is that songwriters and singers don't necessarily have to sound like they were cranked out of the same machinery when they put out a CD. Ryan's CD is fresh and inventive yet is rooted in the traditions that make Texas music a thriving scene for young and old in the Lone Star State. It's country and rock and thoughtful and it all sounds good. Check this one out. Produced by legend in the making Walt Wilkins. JASPER STONE Let 'er Smoke "Turn it up, I can't get enough of a good time" quotes Ed Voyles, lead singer for Jasper Stone (band name, not person), in "Kickin' The Blues". In the 3 years since their last album "Shoot The Moon", it sounds like they have continued to make that their credo and have done just that here on "Let 'Er Smoke". While they clear the air every few numbers with some acoustic non-smokers, they quickly fire back up with some smoldering alt-country, Texas style. Although not quite from the same neck of the bar, you might find Jasper Stone to be the raucous and rollicking ruckus catching your interest as that fun band who opened up for Slobberbone. That would have been a helluva hootenanny." -Miles of Music LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Jack Co. Fair |

SNACKBAR JENKINS Understanding John Galt "The hill people of the southeast called him "Tunesmith". Where the Rockies stand now, he is known as "the next Bruce Segermellonclapton". The desert villages tell of a 6'5", 220 lb, happy warrior who sounds like 'Pink Floyd, on a horse, dipping snuff'. The cold Northern folk claim 'He Will Arrive'. In a world where most people think Tolstoy is a cookie made by Nestle, this singer/songwriter/guitar player, is a rare 'triple threat'. In addition to writing, singing and producing, all guitars on Understanding John Galt are played by Snackbar. We believe his is on the artisitc level of Sheryl Crow, Dave Matthews, Edwin McCain and the handful of other top singer/songwriters of today." LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Babylon's Crumbling |

"This isn't any poser working the Americana angle here...But even with all the heartfelt love songs he sings, he is still an outlaw on the fringes of folk and country, a renegade not givin' a shit, yet givin' more of a shit about the music than those bubbleheads in Nashville who have killed the soul of country music, at least on mainstream radio anyway." BILL JERRAM BAND self-titled This brand new recording, the BJBs first together, delivers on the Roots/Pop and beyond claims. Produced by N. Eugene Brown and released on Ah-Love Records, the CD contains 12 original rock songs that flirt with country, soul, power-pop, storytelling and even 50s do-wop flavors and range from happy to haunting. Bills obsession with British singer/songwriters such as Ray Davies and Elvis Costello shines through, as do his Texas roots. And the proof is in the record: while the Bill Jerram Band may be best classified as a roots/pop band, this album might have you thinking outside those lines a bit. "For the unitiated, singer-songwriter Jerram and his band meld a raucous mixture of country, rootspop, Americana rock and soul." -The Austinist "Exuberant roots-pop from the former Danglers frontman, who's learned lessons from Elvis Costello and Two Hoots and a Holler, among others, quite well indeed." -Chris Gray, Austin Chronicle LISTEN - MP3 Clip! THE JO'S HOUSE BAND Sinner's Brunch For the past five years or so the place to be in South Austin on Sunday mornings is Sinner's Brunch held at Jo's Coffee. A funky alternative to the gospel brunch's springing up all over town it is the place to bring your dog or your kids or your hangover and listen to low-key music laid down by the best players Austin has to offer. Lead by the irrepressible and irresistible Tina Rose the band cranks out its acoustic country with a little swing and folk thrown in for good measure. This particular performance features Tina along with Andrew Nafziger (Bruce Robison/Kellie Willis Band), Seth Walker, Lindsay Green (Elizabeth McQueen) and Eric C. Hughes (The El Orbits) and is produced by the world-famous Dale Watson. So kick back with your South Austin speedball (that's a coffee and a beer for the uninitiated) and feel like a Sunday morning in South Austin all over again. KACEY JONES Sings Mickey Newbury I’ve always felt that Newbury’s works were wise beyond their years and they were songs that had to be grown into which is why he was a cult act that knew how to pop out the hits for others. On this set, Jones has surely matured into giving Newbury the interpretation he deserves, avoiding some of the obvious choices to really put the spotlight on the songs. All roots fans need to check this out if they really are genre fans. Hot stuff. ZONA JONES Harleys and Horses Zona Jones is no stranger to the dimly lit honkytonks and bright neon lights of country music. Zona has shared the stage with many country stars of yesterday and today including Johnny Paycheck, Mark Chesnutt, Neal McCoy, T. Graham Brown, Steve Wariner, Gary Allan, Mark Wills, Asleep At The Wheel, Patty Loveless, Tracy Byrd, Daryle Singletary, Lonestar, Wade Hayes, Clay Walker, Mel Tillis, Johnny Bush, Rick Trevino, Restless Heart, Willie Nelson, and Trace Adkins. Zona was raised on a West Texas ranch, where he grew up working cattle, building fence and anything needed to keep the ranch running. He spent most of his days horseback. At night, he listened to music. We didnt have TV on the ranch so we listened to the radio and our parents albums (instead of doing our homework). Zona liked everything from rock to blues but his true love was country. He listened to the pure traditional sounds of George Jones, Johnny Bush, Charlie Pride, Merle Haggard, Ray Price and Johnny Rodriguez. Like most kids growing up in the 70s, Zona strayed from his country roots to the more popular rock/pop music of the day, but not for long. He was drawn back to his early influences with the resurgence of traditional country music in the early 80s. Ill never forget the first time I heard George Strait. It was unbelievable, my friends and I finally just wore out our copy of Strait Country. That rekindled the childhood flame of wanting to be a country singer. I knew then, that this is what I wanted to do. LISTEN - MP3 Clip! One Fool On a Stool |

STEPHANIE URBINA JONES self-titled "As an artist that freely combines the singer/songwriter vibe with the hot-blooded, traditional sounds of Mexico, Jones naturally embraces a wider swath of the Lonestar state than her contemporaries." -Performing Songwriter "Stephanie Jones has what most people would regard as the right tools for her chosen life's work: an agile songwriter's pen; a smoky supple voice; devastating good looks; and a refreshing lack of music orthodoxy. But Jones real gifts are- an adamant determination, a healthy skepticism about fast- buck payoffs, and a work ethic that would put John Henry and his hammer to shame." -Austin American Statesman LISTEN - MP3 Clip! DAVE JORGENSON self-titled Dave Jorgenson is no newcomer to country music. From a young age, Dave has been slinging a guitar strap and entertaining audiences with songs that reflect his personal life and the real world of Midwestern America. In Dave’s early years, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, and Buck Owens made a lasting impression on what would eventually become his life’s passion. Dave was exposed to every type of music by his teenage friends and through his participation as a sax player in his High School Band, but his heart was always lured back to the songs that were a part of the rural blue-collar life he lived. Dave is country. Produced by long-time George Strait alum Benny McArthur this CD has the modern traditional feel of a Strait record. Dave Jorgenson possesses a rich and supple voice, one that's unmistakably country, and it wraps itself around every note, whether it's the ache of heartbreak or the high spirited optimism of finding true love. He's a strong songwriter, his songs and his sound reminiscent of George Strait in his heyday, or more recently, up and comer Roger Wallace. Then And Now is an outstanding album full of traditional Texas honky tonk, and if you're a fan of that sound, whatever you do, don't let Dave Jorgenson or this disc get away. -Take Country Back LISTEN - MP3 Clip! THE JUKE JUMPERS Amazing Records 1980-1981 Back in the late-1970s, Jim Yanaway was known as an R&B fan and record collector who worked at musician Slim Richey's record distributorship on West Vickery and also ran a record label, Amazing Records. Over the years, he released worthy discage by artists as diverse as Dallas saxman David "Fathead" Newman, Fort Worth R&B guitar pioneer Cornell Dupree, and Jerry Jeff Walker's Lost Gonzo Band. His very first LP release, though, was Border Radio, a too-cool-for-school instant party by the Juke Jumpers, a band fronted by his Richey Records co-worker, Jim Colegrove, and guitar ace Sumter Bruton. Now Colegrove's Cool Groove label has re-released Border Radio on a single disc with the even more rockin' The Joint's Jumpin'! from 1981. Amazing Records! is the name on the new package. The Juke Jumpers established the template for Fort Worth musos like James Hinkle and Johnny Mack, who follow the Texas music fan's dictum of "put all my food on the same plate" -- blues, R&B, swing, rockabilly, zydeco, everything. In the Jumpers' case, the eclecticism came from the confluence of Colegrove's rock 'n' roll and rockabilly roots and Bruton's affinity for jump blues and swing. On these two albums, sax maniac Johnny Reno augmented the lineup. When Border Radio was new, Yanaway hyped the group's sprightly cover of Tommy "Jim" Beam's "My Little Jewel" as "a Rolling Stones move," which it ain't -- Colegrove & Co. had too much roadhouse integrity to ape any limey blues pretenders. Tracks like "Horne Street Bounce" and "The Jump" conjure the spirit of many beery good times at Robert Ealey's New Bluebird Nite Club. The Joint's Jumpin'! adds studio slickness and more developed arrangements to the basic recipe. No po-faced roots homage here; this is dance music. LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Cadillac Boogie |

MARK JUNGERS Standing In Your Way "Mark Jungers leads off his second disc with a song entitled "Sentimental Guy", but his tunes are far from sappy sentimental offerings. He writes tough-minded small town tales, from the gripping "No Easy Way To Go" to the more lighthearted "Repo Outlet Mall". Jungers, who at times sounds like a cross between Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen and Rhett Miller, continues the long line of talented Lone Star troubadours. This disc, featuring a dozen originals plus a cover of "Knoxville Girl", was recorded live in the studio and it projects a spirited spontaneity. " -Miles of Music LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Sentimental Guy |

MARK JUNGERS Black Limousine Somewhere between Bob Dylan and Steve Earle is a large gap that is filled by Mark Jungers' "Black Limousine." This CD is real, confident and just plain good. Don't know if he used a black limo, but singer/songwriter Jungers left behind his native Minnesota for the musically rich Austin, Texas area. Andy Turner, in Country Standard Time, stated that this disc "features 16 well-crafted, instantly appealing songs that should certainly please fans of guys like Greg Trooper, Buddy Miller and Steve Earle. Like those musicians, Jungers writes good songs, tells interesting stories and combines twang and edgy pop with touches of blues, rock and bluegrass." -Miles of Music LISTEN - MP3 Clip! TED RUSSELL KAMP Nashville Fineline Nashville Fineline offers proof that this has been a very prolific period for Ted Russell Kamp. And much like Nashville Fineline`s concurrent release, Divisadero, it was written and recorded on the road - while playing bass with Shooter Jennings, mostly - and other various locations in Kamp`s home base of LA. But Music Row is definitely on the map here as we find Kamp co-writing the bulk of the material with several Nashville writers. And while it seems like some of the tracks might be pushing for radio-ready country, he keeps them grounded with his natural manner and simple production. Kamp handles a variety of strings, keys and horns taking musical assistance from pals Eugene Edwards (guitar), Mike Sessa (drums), Avi Sills (drums), Tony Paoletta (pedal-steel), Eric Heywood (pedal-steel), Brian Wheelan (electric piano, guitar) and Michael Webb (Hammond organ). A vocal appearance by the late Robin Wiley on the funky bayou rocker "Swamp Water Whisky" deserves a special note. -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (Poetry Of The Moment) TRACK LISTING: So Many Honky Tonks, So Little Time / The Way I Met Her / One More Drink Before I Go / Just For You / Goin Goin Goin Gone / Swamp Water Whiskey / The Straightaway / Friday In My Mind / Down In Mexico / Getaway / Living Proof LISTEN - MP3 Clip! KENEFICK HARD ROAD self-titled "On the CD, of the 12 tracks (and one ghost track) 10 are original. One track, Maple On The Hill, written by Gussie Davis, is a very old bluegrass song that is in the public domain. It was popular as far back as the 1920s and Joe Parsons would sing it when he was in Europe with his brothers in arms during WWII. He now sings it at Blancos during his River Oaks Redneck Jams as a sing along with the crowd. Kenefick recorded Joe singing with the crowd, and then faded in a real bluegrass version of the song on the CD. As a tribute to Joe for helping out so many local musicians, Kenefick invited others up to participate in the recording. The Tequila Cowboys, FCo, and Clay Farmer are some of the fine musicians making guest appearances on the track. Another track, Head Over Heels, is the only true cover song. It was written and recorded by one of the most successful bands in Canada, Blue Rodeo. It provides for some good vocal harmonies, so it fit well with Kenefick. The ghost track is a parody on the Baha Mens Who Let The Dogs Out. Quintin Watts wrote the lyrics. The rest of the CD is a good mix of different types of country, and country rock music. There are some Ray Price shuffles, and some Eagles style country rock songs. There is a very mournful acoustic song with some strong dobro work from Lloyd Maines. Long Night In Galveston, is a long story song about a domestic tragedy." LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Don't Make Me Come Over There |

He did it. SHELLEY KING The Highway "Here's a story of irony and persistence: Shelley King toiled locally for the past few years and won a bittersweet victory last month by taking Song of the Year at the Austin Music Awards while simultaneously being rejected for a SXSW showcase. Her prestigious songwriter award benefited in no small part from Toni Price recording King's "Call of My Heart" and "Who Needs Tears" for Midnight Pumpkin, which took Album of the Year, but King's win came down to one thing: She's a talented songwriter. That standard of excellence holds high on her second CD, The Highway. King's songwriting is ripe and bursting with flavors from country to Tex-Mex to zydeco ("The Highway," "Crescent City," "Texas Blue Moon," and "Running Out of Blue"), filled with delicious melodies, sometimes tart lyrics, and promises of good things to come. King's next stop should be opening for Lucinda Williams or even Willie Nelson." -Margaret Moser, Austin Chronicle LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Running Out of Blue |
