1986 Nihlism Is Nothing To Worry About TRACK LISTING: Laughing / Better When You're Stoned / I Know / It's Too Bad / Mechanical Dreams / Narcotic / Holiday / Comatose / .22 Caliber / Creep Like Me When was the last time you bought a solid rock record that you never wanted to end? One that had such power, melody, and consistently good songwriting that you wanted to leave the whole album on repeat? Or even an album where each song is so good you could never hit the skip button? Ladies and gentlemen, please meet 1986. 1986’s first recording was a self-released EP, and though if was only released in Austin, the recording featured collaborations from some unexpected characters: Jeff Pinkus from Butthole Surfers helped out, as did Bill Elm from Friends of Dean Martinez et al, and Chris Masterson, guitarist for Hank III. The band was still very young then, but Austin already knew what they had in Giorgio Angelini and company. On this new release, Mark Deutron of The Melvins produced and played guitar, and Thom Monahan (producer for Pernice Bros, Silver Jews, et al) was the mixer. Though 1986 has had a successful beginning with lots of praise from friends and fellow musicians, their favorite story happened one night at the Hole in the Wall in Austin: Roky Erickson had come to see his brother, Sumner, open for the band and was going to leave before 1986’s set. Giorgio convinced Roky to stick around, and the band opened the set with a cover of 13th Floor Elevator’s “You’re Going to Miss Me.” Roky was moved to tears by the touching homage, never realizing the affect his music has had on the younger generation, and later named 1986 as one of his favorite Austin bands in an interview with Texas Music Magazine. BEAVER NELSON Legends of the Super Heroes Another brilliant effort from Austin's brightest young songwriting talent. Produced by Beaver with Scrappy Jud Newcomb and J.M. Roe. Highly recommended! "Superman and Batman, according to the scrapbook photos on Beaver Nelson's fourth and best album. His little boy in the red cape, Beaver in blue. Seeing that Legends of the Super Heroes is number four out of the chute since 1998 for Austin's Raggedy Man, Beaver should have the "S" emblazoned across his chest. After all, it's a measure of full bloom when new chapters in an artist's canon cause wholesale reappraisal of an entire body of work, and Super Heroes makes Nelson's debut (The Last Hurrah) and follow-up Little Brother -- critical successes both -- look like the works of a mere mortal. No such Achilles' heel here, just an empty phone booth and a pile of clothes. The DJ Shadow/"Losing My Religion"/"Train in Vain" intro to plaintive opener "Clean It Up" sets a standard that leaves the rest of Legends leaping the Austin skyline in a single bound. "Digging a Well," with its L.A.-1967 twinkle and blue-collar chorus, couldn't be any more endearing, while "Anything Easy Left" follows with a honeyed strum and a superhuman spirit ("Every time I feel poor, I think of something grand in the world"). "Chameleon Brain" can only be described as one of those songs waiting for the chosen songwriter to channel it out of the ether; "Government Sanctioned Hayride," for its part, is as catchy as the aforementioned R.E.M. tune -- the standout on an album full of them. Toward the end, "It Seems So Simple" creaks with Nelson's smiling-eyed sincerity, lacking only an open guitar case sprinkled with change for true appreciation. "[Super Heroes isn't] what you would expect if you're already a fan," writes Nelson in the booklet. Maybe not, but it's what we'll come to expect, Batman." -Raoul Hernandez, Austin Chronicle LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Digging a Well LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Sleep (No Rest) |

BEAVER NELSON Undisturbed Austin's brightest young songwriting talent has made the Austin record of the year. Highly recommended. Produced by Scrappy Jud Newcomb. Features Stephen Belans, Cornbread, Papa Mali, Mambo John Treanor, David Boyle, Ian McLagan and Walter Tragert. "Beaver Nelson just keeps getting better. On his third full length, the Austin-based Nelson raises the bar, as well as the roof. Undisturbed expertly balances energetic rockers (like "Eleven Again" and "Better Now") with more pensive numbers ("Experiments In Love" and "The Beauty In Store"). The Beatles-tinted "God's Tears" ranks as another standout. Hopefully this gem of a disc will serve to break Beaver Nelson out to the larger audience that he deserves." -Miles of Music LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Mad River |

MICHAEL O'CONNOR Green and Blue Produced by Ray Wylie Hubbard. Michaels songwriting reflects his cross influences as he incorporates blues, country, folk and rock into a sound uniquely his own. Some of his influences include BB King, Robert Johnson, Johnny Winter, Steve Earle, John Hiatt & Lucinda Williams. "Michael O'Connor shares the bluesy side of Americana...rocks at times, and veers the blues to the familiar edge of gospel and almost to the edge of country. His guitar work shines without being showy and his soulful vocals fit his thoughtful lyrics like the reflection of neon on a rainsoaked juke-joint parking lot at closing time." -Tom Geddie, Buddy Magazine For more info check out www.michaeloconnormusic.com |

OHARAMAYA self-titled Starting her career just a few ago, Oharamaya has quickly become a force in the Yokohama area's singer-songwriter scene. The quality of her songs and dark yet moving melodies are hard to believe for a girl her age. Sung in beautiful Japanese lyrics, she draws sad and dim pictures that are truly her own. On this debut CD she sings and plays acoustic guitar - her sensitive and sensual playing is one of the biggest attractions of her live shows - as well as harmonica, slide guitar and piano. Musically her music could be compared to roots-oriented acoustic artists like Gillian Welch and Beth Orton. GREG PARKER On the Break (EP) As someone who despises modern country, but adores the 40s and 50s stuff, I have some time for Knoxville, TNs Mr. Parker. Hes got no Stetson, and he doesnt dress the part eitherin fact, with his upturned quaff, he looks a lot like a young Morrissey in the Smiths daysbut theres no mistaking his homespun, old-style country heart. You think you broke my will/You broke my heart/Thats just a start/So get in line Caroline/Im going to show you how it feels/Wasting time on a love that isnt real is the kind of sweet, saddened, knowing lyric sung with a breaking croon that is full and slightly twangy but never corny and always quite persuasivein fact, he blows away Tritt, McGraw, Keith, Hill, Brooks, Twain, Tucker, Black, and all their miserable ilk, with just his vibrant voice alone. His delectable songs are simple, like my favorite George Jones tunes, but the guitars ring and pick perfectly like a Buck Owens ditty (Disaster Waiting to Happen) and A Heart Is A Terrible Thing To Break could be a Patsy Cline, early Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, or Hank Williams song. And just to show he can, the closing Kathleen is more of a honky tonk C&W blues-country stomp. I didnt expect to like this, and you might not either. Well both be surprised then. -Jack Rabid, Big Takeover, Issue 54, Spring 2004 LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Molly Dear |

LAURA PELLEGRINO House Burnin' Down Laura Pellegrino has been playing live music professionally since she was a senior in high-school. A classically trained vocalist from a young age, Laura stumbled onto the blues at 17, thanks to a locally syndicated show on her home-town radio station, KMOD, in Tulsa, Ok. After graduating from the Univ. of Texas at Austin, Laura spent 4 years in that music-loving city playing full-time in all of its most prestigious clubs alongside many of its most well-known players. Drawing on a wide variety of influences she is as often inspired by guitar players as songwriters. And though her sound is uniquely her own, it is inherently infused with much of the same musical sensibilities that continue to make up the Austin sound. A recent 2 year stint in Baltimore, and a return to full-time gigging in that city as well as a more recent move to Buenos Aires, Argentina have served to inspire Laura's strongest work to date. Well, he waltzed up carrying his own personal barstool with "PEDRO" written on the seat, his old guitar and a battered, tattered notebook full of his song lyrics and chord changes. He opened up that notebook, thumbed through a few pages and started singing lyrics that could only be written by someone who had been around long enough to figure out how to share life stories that he had really lived. In this uneasy time of youngsters calling themselves a "Texas Songwriter" before they have actually earned the title, I found Pedro's music to be refreshing and inspiring. Bob Plunkert takes several old favorites here, including two that I wrote, and dresses them up with a sparkling coat of new paint. Thanks, Bob. Youve really made them shine. Bill Anderson, Member of the Country Music Hall Of Fame, WSM Grand Ole Opry Star The vibe in the studio that day was absolutely infectious. Virtually all of the music was cut live just as you hear it. When recording in this fashion (the way that the majority of all recording was done up into the 1970s), the musicians and the artist work off of each other in subtle ways they dont even realize. Recording live also allows the music to have a special life and breathability to it that you arent able to achieve by just going in and recording one instrument, one track at a time This is a hard-core traditional country album with the spirit and feel that country records had in the fifties, sixties, and early seventies. Its a very special sound and a feel that is not heard often live It was an honor to be involved in this project as producer and its something that Ill always remember with great pride. CURTIS POTTER Walking on New Grass Walking On New Grass offers up a healthy dose of outstanding swing by way of the title track, a stellar cover of Kenny Price's 1966 top 10 hit "Walking On New Grass," a rousing and spirited "San Antonio Medley" that includes "Home In San Antone/San Antonio Rose/There's Still A Lot Of Love In San Antone," a cover of Moon Mullican's "I Was Sorta Wondering," and another trip back to San Antone for "Mama Was The Rose Of San Antone." Curtis serves up classic honky tonk shuffles with a standout cover of Johnny Russell's "Someday I'll Sober Up," the tale of heartache with a Ray Pillow cover ""One Too Many Memories," "Look What You're Doing," and the mid-tempo shuffle "Your Favorite Fool." Heartache is on tap with the barroom weepers "Our Yesterdays" and a terrific cover of Carl Smith's 1964 top 30 "I Almost Forgot Her Today." Curtis delivers a straight up ballad, a take on "Shenandoah," that really spotlights his truly gorgeous voice. Curtis Potter, with his wonderful, warm baritone (which, when it comes to tales of heartbreak, seems to have a permanent catch of ache in his voice) is one vocalist who rightly deserves the comparisons made to the aforementioned legends of honky tonk and swing. For fans of this elite group who sing so convincingly that they sound as if they invented the style, then both Curtis Potter and Walking On New Grass belongs in your collection without question. FREDDY POWERS Silver Eagle Although his third album this is the first Freddy Powers album I have ever been able to get my hands on and he is just as good as I thought he'd be. He's shared and been given equal billing with Merle Haggard on an Austin City Limits Show and the Hag has cut more than a handful of his songs. Freddy returns the compliment and includes a terriic tribute to Hag on the album's title cut. -Steve Reid, Night & Day Records LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Silver Eagle |

MARYANN PRICE Lone Star State O' Grace Maryann was inducted to The Texas Music Hall of Fame March 13, 2002!!! Maryann was inducted to The Western Swing Hall Of Fame May 20, 2000!!! At long last the voice behind Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks, The Kinks and Asleep At The Wheel is taking center stage. Jazz vocalist Maryann Price leads her own jazz trio and is one half of the eclectic duo Ethyln Methyl, along with Asleep At The Wheel alumnus Chris O'Connell. After singing commercial jingles in her native Baltimore and jazz in Las Vegas showrooms Price moved to San Francisco in 1969. She was immediately hired by the most original band in town, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, becoming one of the most popular groups on the west coast. Upon hearing of the Hot Lick's breakup in 1973, the Kinks' Ray Davies asked Maryann to move to England and join the legendary British rockers. Davies penned several songs for Maryann and she stayed with the Kinks for a year, touring extensively and recording "Preservation Act 2". Returning to America, Maryann formed The Girtones with former Hot Licks guitarist John Girton and in 1980 Price was contacted by longtime fan Ray Benson, leader of the legendary band "Asleep At The Wheel" and soon she was logging countless road miles. She stayed with the "Wheel" for two years and recorded "Framed" with them before embarking on her solo career. In 1991 Maryann organized the first reunion in 17 years of the original Hot Licks. The show packed Austin's Paramount Theater and culminated in an appearance on "Austin City Limits" which generated unprecedented viewer response. Maryanns voice can be heard on numerous commercial jingles and along with Chris O'Connell she appeared on the Southwest Airlines television commercials. Maryann now resides in Austin, Texas where she performs regularly and her recordings are much sought after. Price's long awaited first solo album entitled "Etched In Swing" received critical acclaim as did her live, autographed CD "Hot 'n' Cole". SPRING CLEANING has just been released but whether its boogie, ballad, or jazz, the unifying element is the one-of-a-kind voice of Maryann Price. LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Put a Little Lipstick On |

PUNCHY Just My Type Austin's Punchy has been described as "midwestern rock in the tradition of Soul Asylum and The Replacements with influences from Elvis Costello and Ian Hunter." The songs convey images of the same small town desperation that fueled legendary tunesmiths like Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Lyle Lovett. Their musical approach is more in the vein of roots rock disciples like Wilco and Steve Earle. LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Just My Type |

MATT RAE Twang! In the spirit of guitar greats like Jimmy Bryant and Albert Lee, Matt Rae arrived in 2003 with a vital instrumental guitar CD in his own right. A rockin' fusion of western swing, country bluegrass, surf, rockabilly and blues, Rae's solo debut, TWANG! is a guitar lover's dream come true. Spotlighting Rae's sizzling 'Tele-Tone' approach, TWANG! hits hard and fast and on song titles like "Surf Wrangler," "Tele-Savalas" and "Harmambo," Rae is cruisin' in fast lane.---Robert Silverstein, 20th Century Guitar Magazine "Master of the Telecaster. Only a select few have earned that title: Roy Buchanan, Albert Lee, Danny Gatton, Mark Knopfler. To that list, now add Matt Rae. The proof is in the pudding - his self-titled, mostly original, instrumental CD. There's a lot of musical territory covered here - country, rock, blues, funk, swing, and even fusion. But it's all held together by that legendary Tele sound: clean, clear, funky, and shimmering." LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Road Rage |

RAMBLER Starting Over "Rambler, whom many people remember as Redneck-the Band, opened the show with a very well-received set of mostly original music. Playing now as a four-piece, following the loss of it's longtime fiddle player, drummer Matt Emmons, lead guitarist Troy Chavez and identical twins Tim (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Dave (vocals and bass guitar) Brown began with a couple of jangly, ear-catching songs that reflected a '60's rock n' roll influence. But just when you thought the band was going Mersey-beat on you, the guys turned right around and began knocking out hard-country originals like the Haggardesque "I Ain't Drinkin' Any Less", with it's thumping Waylon-style beat, and a truckin' song called "Ain't That the Story of My Life". One of the most impressive songs of Rambler's fine set combined both the country and '60's pop influences. Called "Since I Started Drinkin' Again", it wed a cut-time, hard country beat and lyrics to a guitar riff right out of the Monkees' pop hit "Last Train to Clarksville". By the final song-an epic treatment of Steve Earle's "Copperhead Road"-Rambler had earned a crowd response far greater than most opening acts in similar situations. We've said it here before, and we'll say it again: It's time these guys made the jump to national stardom." -Tulsa World LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Jonny's Gone |

JOHN X REED and JESSE TAYLOR South Side Guitar Two Texas Legends have finally made their first record together, after thirty years of friendship. With George Raines on drums, Glen Fukanaga on bass and a special guest appearance by Nokie Edwards of the Ventures on one song make this a special treat for fans of Texas music. "West Texas has always been a breeding ground for great guitar players, and Jesse Taylor and John Reed are living proof of that. When Jesse told me that he and John were doing an album with Nokie Edwards, it was as if a certain destiny had been fulfilled. Great musicians find each other, plain and simple. When I heard the record, I was once again, taken far away to that place I had visited years before on the dusty Lubbock day. Call it Paradise or call it Heaven. Either way, you too, will be taken to that place." -Joe Ely LISTEN - MP3 Clip! Don't Give Up |
