FREDDIE STEADY'S WILD COUNTRY (Shakin' Apostles)
Lucky 7
Wild country is just that. Country through and through yet, well, wild. The sounds of hot, sweaty Gulf Coast Texas, from the bar rooms to the bayous, city streets to back porches, yet all filtered through the iconoclastic talent of Freddie Steady Krc. When this mighty album was recorded in the mid-80s Freddie had already put behind him spells with New Wave almost-made-its the Explosives and Texan psychedelic guru Roky Erickson. Then he fled to England, assembled some of the nation's finest crossover musicians (devoted to country when not playing alongside the likes of John Cale, Bill Wyman, Bob Geldof and others) and made Lucky 7, aided by the engineer from the Sex Pistols' bombastic sessions. The result is, quite simply, stunning. Alt-country before anyone knew what that was (if, indeed, they do now). Country as rock 'n' roll, rock 'n' roll as country. A handful of well-chosen covers and a welter of Freddie originals, hummable, danceable classics from a time before he became a known Texan singer-songwriter with the thundering twang of his now band, the Shakin' Apostles. Listen to one of the most beautiful pure country songs you're ever likely to come across, (I Hear) Neon Angels Sing. The instrumental crash of Ride Through Wild Country (led by the album's producer, Brit guitar genius Wes McGee). The divine High Lonesome Country Soul (and real country soul it is, too). And then a host of out-and-out rockers, all pedal steel and fiddle and squeezebox and killer guitar. It's an album that's as new and exciting today as it was then. And with the added bonus of four extra tracks featuring Austin's high church of wayward country geniuses...Butch Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, pianist Floyd Domino, fiddler Alvin Crow and more. If you're not sweating and grinning by the end, it really is time to worry. -Nick Dalton MAVERICK MAGAZINE (UK)

BRANDON SILVEIRA
That Boy Ain't Right
TRACK LISTING: 1. Dusty Ol' Road / 2. Lonesome Wishin' Fool / 3. Heaven Needs Angels / 4. Now and Then / 5. Life Don't Get Much Better Than This / 6. Insane / 7. Country's Being Wronged / 8. Fine Women / 9. Country Party / 10. Beer-Thirty / 11. Mistakes

—America fell in love with this spikey-haired hillbilly rocker on last year’s Nashville Star competition. With virtually no performance experience, Brandon demonstrated astonishing stage finesse and impressive vocal individuality. As an album, Brandon's music is just as charming as it is live on TV. Charlie Robison and I lobbied hard to get him on the show, and his new CD, "That Boy Ain’t Right" doesn’t let us down for one moment. You go, Brandon!-Robert K. Oermann

THE SKEETERS
Easy For The Takin'
TRACK LISTING: 1. Easy for the Takin' / 2. Tryin to get there / 3. The Road / 4. Jester of Life / 5. I Have Just Begun / 6. Johnny / 7. Cut Me Down(And turn me loose) / 8. Alabama Love Song / 9. Mother Trucker / 10. Memory Lane / 11. Dodgin' the Blues / 12. Cowboy / 13. After the Fact / 14. Honky Tonkin'
Although The Skeeters' overall sound bears a striking similarity to Waylon at his best, they also incorporate bits of Nashville's other outlaws - Billy Joe Shaver, Kristofferson, Willie and Cash- along with plenty of their own original sound. Bert possesses a truly amazing voice, the songwriting is strong, powerful and doesn't merely rehash tired old themes that have become cliche. The band perfectly captures the spirit of the music, their playing is tight and on target but at the same time projects a loose, almost reckless sound. The result is a fresh updated perspective on the much storied roadhouse/honky tonk country of the outlaw glory days. The Skeeters hit a home run with their self titled debut. On Easy For The Takin'', this time they hit one out of the park- with the bases loaded. - Take Country Back

THE SMALL STARS
self-titled
"Too hacky to hack it in Vegas, the Small Stars – a lounge lizard, a porn star, a professor, a cattle baron, and a surfer – set out from Reno to visit the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue at Auditorium Shores. Their bus broke down, but the bassist, also the band's resident therapist and pharmacist, was so impressed with the local supply of recreational drugs he convinced them to stay. As backstories go, it's not bad, but it's also totally made up. Small Stars is actually some longtime locals goofing on low-rent cocktail culture. The ringleader is Guy Fantasy, a shades-clad swinger who resembles Andy Kaufman's scabrous alter ego Tony Clifton, Bill Murray's Nick the Lounge Singer and, most of all, Fastball's Miles Zuniga. "Basically, I wanted a license to explore my inner asshole," he says. Small Stars took shape after the last Fastball tour, where, much to bandmate Tony Scalzo's chagrin, Zuniga would sometimes embark on "long, rambling monologues." "Tony said, 'I don't want to be in a revue,'" Zuniga chuckles. But Zuniga did, and for the record, Scalzo was seen having a fabulous time at a recent Small Stars show. When Zuniga got back, he recruited a handful of local players – Landis Armstrong, Jeff Johnston, Matt Hubbard – to help bring his louche vision to life. Selections may include anything from Tom Waits' "Jockey Full of Bourbon" to the Ides of March's "Vehicle," or friend Vic Odon's full-throated take on "Wasted Days, Wasted Nights." "The music lends itself to late-night rambling," Zuniga says. "What you'd want to hear on your fourth whiskey." A Small Stars show might feature a magic show, blue stand-up comedy from Vinnie Lombardi, a hula-hoop dancer, and special guests like Tom Banjo, who brought his brilliant Cranky Show a few weeks back. "I didn't want to be in another band that was just a band," Zuniga says. His ultimate goal is a full-on musical production; he's gradually begun working originals like "Everything's Keen-o in Reno" into their act, and is looking for a pair of female dancers he plans to dub Bubble & Squeak." -Austin Chronicle

Sunbird sits out back of the main house next to the chicken coop on the Gracey homestead. The James Burton session was recorded on a cold and rainy winter day with a Franklin stove for warmth. SHADRIC SMITH
Shadric Smith and The Billy Buffalo Band
For a great combination of country, folk, blues and western swing give this CD a try! Featuring singer-songwriter Shadric Smith and a group of talented young musicians with the addition of Vassar Clements as guest fiddler on three of the tracks. Recorded in 1978, this collection of fourteen original songs was the end result of eight years of song writing and was meant to be released as an "album" on a small midwestern label called Cognito Records out of Minneapolis. Unfortunately that never happened, and after the tapes lay dormant for twenty years a CD was finally released on Out of the Blue Records in 1999. A thousand copies were pressed, of which there are still about two hundred left...so these can truly be called Limited Edition collector's items.

THE STINGERS ATX
This Good Thing
Since 1998, The Stingers ATX have steadily developed their own modern hybrid of Jamaican reggae-rocksteady
and classic American soul, from their weekly three-hour showcases at the Black Cat Lounge in Austin, Texas to New Year's Eve in Paris. While their live shows keep crowds on their feet with solid roots-reggae rhythms, melodic horn lines, and tight 3- and 4-part vocal harmonies, their songwriting sensibility draws from the styles of Bob Marley and the Wailers, Gregory Isaacs, Sam Cooke, and the Drifters. This six-piece lineup, which features established musicians from Austin's famed music scene, maintain an active tour schedule from Texas to New York City's Knitting Factory to Europe.
In the summer of 2002, Grover Records, one of Europe's most active reggae/ska labels, took notice of The Stingers ATX's successes and signed the band to record their most recent LP This Good Thing (Winter 2002). For this project, they collaborated with NYC studio veteran Victor Rice, who utilized his extensive knowledge of the traditions of reggae and rocksteady to highlight the group's ability to use conventional Jamaican elements in an updated American style.

"This is Austin Rocksteady: three-part harmonies combined with faithful execution of the Jamaican rhythms. Add to the mix one Jonny Meyers from Forest Hills, NYC with major songwriting ability. We emerged from Music Lane Studios with 14 fresh hot biscuits for this song-starved planet." -Victor Rice on This Good Thing

Bad Tattoo
"Jeff Talmadge was born in Ulvade, Texas, and spent his earliest years under the twin spells of rock 'n roll and folk music. He was deeply influenced by Townes Van Zandt and John Stewart and intrigued by the growing music scene in Austin. At Duke University, he won the prestigious Academy of American Poets Award, seeing publication of several of his pieces. He went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts from the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers in North Carolina. After years away from actively performing, Jeff struck out on his own in 1998. He now headlines at venues throughout the region, donates his time and talents to numerous causes and charities, and continuously works to perfect his performing and songwriting. This high level of professionalism earned Jeff a slot as a showcase artist or finalist at Folsom Ridge, KRCL Founder's Title Folk and Bluegrass Festival, Tucson Folk Festival, Sierra Songwriter's Festival Lake County Folk Fesival and the Wildflower Arts and Music Festival. Jeff is an active member of the Folk Alliance, as well as a founding member of the Austin Performing Songwriters." JACKSON TAYLOR BAND
Hollow Eyed and Wasted
"
Jackson Taylor and the boys pick up right where they left off on Gypsies & Drifters and offer ten more songs of some of the best new Outlaw country around. This is not the lowest common denominator ad executive version of Texas music - - hell, no. This is the sound of every night in a new roadhouse or honky-tonk, one too many the night before and waking up to the realization of some horrible miscalculation, good times, hard living, and the moral conflicts of existing in a Nietzschean universe. Yeah, that's right, Jackson Taylor knows his way around a bar, but his lyrics show he's also no stranger to the darker corners of the Ivory Tower. On the disc's opening track, a bar room rocker about raising hell called "Long Legs & Longnecks," Jackson Taylor's paean to insouciance - - try and say that after a few shots - - has a few sobering reflections hidden in its crevices. But don't let that scare you away..." -Jud Block, Rockzilla World

JACKSON TAYLOR BAND
Gypsies and Drifters
"
Jackson Lee Taylor has a lot of expectations to live up to. Many of legends have three names – take Billy Joe Shaver, Jerry Jeff Walker, or Robert Earl Keen for example. These are the guys who have lived the lives of gypsies and drifters. Taylor’s sophomore is aptly titled Gypsies and Drifters, and is dedicated to ol’ Waylon Jennings. That being said, the album is one that I had expectations for even before listening to it....Gypsies and Drifters has too many high points to name just one. And there’s too many great songs to pack into a single review. What can be said is that Taylor has averted the “jinx” of the “sophomore album curse,” that can make or break an artist or a band. Be sure to catch these gypsies and drifters when they roll into a town near you."

Their influences are clear throughout "Humboldt County," a time-warp disc that recalls the late '50s, when the fences between country and rock 'n' roll were a whole lot lower. Taylor (no relation to James) has found a musical middle ground without compromising his sound. The mix of covers and originals are equally appealing. Taylor is excellent on the Elvis hit "That's All Right Mama" (you can hear hints of a sneer in his voice) and the disc's title track, his own "Humboldt County Grown," is a hip and funny riff on his youth in Northern California's hippie haven. Taylor will probably find his biggest audience in Nashville, but his music has the kind of heart and honesty that deserves much wider acclaim.

Summer Days
"I took my band along with Lloyd Maines and Riley Osbourne down to Port A to record this CD. The studio is located about a block from the beach and about a mile from Shorty's. What a perfect place to record "Summer Days". I don't know what the definition of "Island Music" is but I do know that I wrote eight of the ten songs on Mustang Island and we reorded and mixed the CD on the island so I guess this must be "Island Music." I hope it puts you on a sunny island somewhere if only for a little while." -Larry Joe Taylor. Right Here and Now
The latest from the popular the Texas singer-songwriter. Produced by Phil Madeira, the album features 12 new tracks. The result is an album that overflows with life and honors the traditions of American roots music. The quiet power of “Little Sweet Loss” reminds us of our shared kinship with “people you pass on the street.” “No Daring Is Fatal”, the first single, is a fiddle-charged anthem to living life boldly, and “This Ain’t Las Vegas,” a statement of commitment to a lover despite the odds, is the result of a rocky vacation trip Temple made to the Nevada gambling mecca.

From the very first smoky pleadings of W.C. JUSTIN TREVINO
The Scene of the Crying
The Scene of the Crying, Trevino’s second Lone Star Records album, finds the multitalented artist echoing the golden years of country music with a modern savvy, and joined by some famed guests.

"Justin has been back in the studio and produced his latest masterpiece. He has a very good talent with finding the right songs. This is as usual real hard Texas Honky Tonk songs. The songs are many old greats mixed with some for me new titles. I would like to mention all 12 songs as favourites but I´ll satisify myself by only mentioning "Two Empty Glasses", "Three´s A Crowd" (which was recorded by George Jones way back when), "Sound That Breaking Heart Makes", "Rest Of My Life", "She Didn´t Color Daddy", "Then And Only Then" and the best track of the CD "I Saw A Man Dying Today". I want to give any extra hat to Dicky Overbey for his incredibly wonderful steelplaying. He has gotten a lot of room to play on this record. A must-have for you who like Texas-country. Here it is at its´ best."

RANSOM TULLIS & the LUXURY LINERS
self-titled
Well hell yea. It's about time that we get some guys back on the scene in Austin that were there "in the day". What does it sound like? Texas Outlaw Country, Lukenbach-style, with an eye toward early-seventies "original" alternative-country from bands like Poco, Pure Prarie League and Gram Parsons.
Leading the band is Ransom Tullis (a.k.a. Gregg Yows). Taking his stage name from his great, great grandfather who was known for stirring up trouble in South Texas, Gregg has been a part of the Austin music scene in various projects since the early nineties.
The Luxury Liners boasts an all-star line-up starring legends like drummer and original player on Michael Martin Murphy's classic “Cosmic Cowboy”, Michael McGeary. McGeary is probably most known for his drum work as the backbone of Jerry Jeff Walker’s Lost Gonzo Band, taking the lead on numerous albums including the now legendary “Viva Terlingua” which also features Gary P. Nunn, Ray Willie Hubbard and others. McGeary was also the man on the skins for Balcones Fault, who in their day, were the kings of the Armadillo World Headquarters.
Joining McGeary in the rhythm section is bassist Dean Stinsmuehlen, also from Balcones Fault. Dean is as solid as they come and has seen it all. Country flat-pickin’ guitar and mandolin virtuoso Peter Stiles (Meat Purveyors) rounds out the core of the band.

Drawing heavily on musical influences that were a part of Kevin's upbringing in Galveston, Texas The Twin City Playboys stay true to the origins of the music. TWO TONS OF STEEL
Vegas
Recorded in Austin at Cedar Creek Studios, the new album perfectly captures the band’s rockabilly style — evoking the 1950s combo sound with masterful execution of the rock ’n’ roll beat, on-the-mark vocals, and country steel guitar and upright bass. It’s a sound that draws more than 12,000 fans to the band’s annual Two Tons Tuesdays music series at Gruene Hall and has earned it Best Country Band honors for eight years from the band’s hometown entertainment weekly, San Antonio Current.
Bandleader and frontman Kevin Geil penned the Tex-Mex flavored title track “Vegas,” with its south-of-the-border horns and chicken-pickin’ guitar, for his wife, Elena, “because she loves Vegas and loves to drive.” She also gets credits for photographs in the new album.
Weighing in with Geil (lead vocals, acoustic guitar) on Vegas, produced by Lloyd Maines, are Dennis Fallon (electric guitar, harmonica), Ric Ramierez (upright bass, harmony vocals), Chris Dodds (drums, harmony vocals) and Texas Steel Guitar Hall of Famer Denny Mathis (also dobro). Additional layers of sound are supplied by Riley Osbourn (Hammond B3, piano) and Fernando Castillo (trumpets).
"Two Tons of Steel is the archetypal Texas roadhouse band because they dish out a lusty mix of Western swing, honky-tonk and '50s rockabilly. In other words, every genre of music sanctioned by the state." -- Gilbert Garcia, San Antonio Current

Dan Tyler is a singer-songwriter based in Nashville. His songs have been recorded by, among others; Eddy Arnold, Bobby Blue Bland, The Cox Family, Jackie DeShannon, Kenny Rogers, LeAnn Rimes, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Oak Ridge Boys, Joni Harms, Juice Newton, Paul Overstreet, SKO, Dr. Hook, Agnetha Faltskog (ABBA), Billy Ray Reynolds, Eddie Rabbitt, Steve Alaimo, Marie Osmond, Razzy Bailey, Mark Gray, Atlanta, and Fred Knobloch.

After 20 years as a successful songwriter, Dan is releasing "I Hope", his debut cd as a singer. Dan wrote all 11 songs on the cd, which was produced by Joe Pisapia, himself a talented singer-songwriter currently touring with Guster (2003).

In choosing songs from a lifetime of work, Dan and Joe were guided by their desire to communicate on a deep level with the listener. "I Hope" is a mature work from a writer who has lived long enough to appreciate the paradox of life, the joy and pain of existence. Despite the serious nature of the cd, the songs are remarkable for their musicality and "humability".

Live At Jovitas
"More than ten years had gone by since we'd all been together. Rehearsing at Mambo's house we were amazed at the way the songs fell together, and that the hot summer night at Jovita's in South Austin, the spirit felt strong indeed. I think we all felt like we'd finally come home. I know I did. After the gig we sat outside under the trees, beneath the stars, as we had so many times before, and spoke of many things.
