V/A - BUCK OWENS Happy Birthday, Buck! A Texas Salute To Buck Owens It all started more than a decade ago with one great idea. Two giants of Austins country music scene - guitarist Casper Rawls (Toni Price, The LeRoi Brothers) and drummer Tom Lewis (Jim Lauderdale, The Wagoneers) - were such fans of country music pioneer Buck Owens that they wanted to recognize his birthday by staging an annual concert. Now headed into its 11th year at Austins fabled Continental Club, this event has become a tradition that has not only celebrated the life and music of Buck Owens, but has also raised money every year for The Travis County Childrens Advocacy Center (including all artist royalties from sales of this CD). Now heres the CD! As a companion to this wonderful local event, Casper and Tom have teamed up with Texas Round-Up Records to bring the world Happy Birthday, Buck! A Texas Salute To Buck Owens. Produced by Casper with Asleep At the Wheels David Sanger, this is by no means a predictable reading of Bucks Greatest Hits. Boasting 22 songs and clocking in at almost 60 minutes, this CD features some of Bucks best-known songs (Under Your Spell Again, Tall Dark Stranger) as well as some of his more obscure numbers (Flash, Crash and Thunder, Down On The Corner Of Love). But then what would you expect from a bunch of diehard Texas Buck Owens fans? Happy Birthday, Buck! A Texas Salute To Buck Owens features a talented group of vocalists ranging from country music hit-makers (David Ball, Rick Trevino) to Americana heroes (Jim Lauderdale, Rosie Flores) to Texas honky tonk favorites (The Derailers, Libbi Bosworth) to Bucks family and bandmates (Buddy Owens, Doyle Holly). The instrumentalists are also worthy of note. Joining Rawls and Lewis and the rest of Bucks Birthday House Band (bassist David Carroll and steel guitarist Kevin Owens) are world-class musicians like Flaco Jimenez, Albert Lee, Herb Pedersen, Cindy Cashdollar, Jason Roberts and former Buckaroo (and Johnny Cash sideman) Earl Poole Ball. But theres more! Included as a bonus track is a live recording of Loves Gonna Live Here from the 1995 show that features Buck himself on guitar and lead vocals! For those of you who cant make it to Austin on August 12th, this exciting track and all of Happy Birthday, Buck! A Texas Salute To Buck Owens will hopefully provide a window into the incredible energy of the annual shows and the love that Texas musicians have for Buck Owens. TRACK LISTING: 1. ROGER WALLACE That Kind of Lonely Produced by Asleep At the Wheel drummer David Sanger. "As he did on his debut, 1999's Hillbilly Heights, Wallace has written some classic-sounding heartbreak songs like the title track, "Square One," and "From the Time I Get Up." Wallace also tackles tunes from the songbooks of Roger Miller and Johnny Horton, and it all adds up to one of the best-sounding sets of traditional country released out of Austin in a very long time. The amazing thing about all this is that Wallace's original tunes stand up just fine next to those venerable classics, and there's not a clinker in the bunch. Another standout track is "I Never Picked Cotton," a song associated with Roy Clark, which features a gospel-style chorus and just oozes country soul. Wallace has collected a stellar band to back him -- Jim Stringer on guitar, Lisa Pankratz on drums, Brad Fordham on bass, Marty Muse on steel guitar, and Eamon McLoughlin on fiddle --and their ensemble play goes a long way toward keeping That Kind Of Lonely in a firm country groove. That said, the real star is Wallace, whose supple voice wraps around a lyric with subtle grace and a measured amount of passion, proving that he's surely one of the best singers, not only in Austin, but in all of country music." -Jim Caligiuri, Austin Chronicle "Unlike young artists who slump on their sophomore release, Wallace has refined, magnified and expanded everything that was right with his debut. The result is one hellaciously fine LP." -Eli Messinger, Country Standard Time LISTEN - MP3 Clip! I Ain't Gonna Waste My Time |

ROGER WALLACE Hillbilly Heights Austin's finest young honky-tonk singer-songwriter. Features an all-star cast that includes Lisa Pankratz, Elana Fremerman, Brad Fordham, Marty Muse and Jim Stringer. Roger Wallace's "Hillbilly Heights" is made under the Texas Round-Up Records label. Once again, the very best of country is not from Nashville. When he sings, there's no doubt it's fueled by a burning belief that a Texas honky-tonk is not merely a place, but a cold hard fact of life. He was recently dubbed "the find of SXSW" and "the most impressive new voice to emerge from the Austin talent pool" by Country Music People (UK). Nine of the thirteen songs included were writen by Roger himself, showing that he's also a talented songwriter. There're covers of Kris Kristofferson, Wynn Stewart, Jerry Reed and Larry Kingston's songs. Firmly rooted in the tradition of honky-tonk, are songs such as "The Runaround" or "Wishful Drinking" that easily can become standards in a near future. Sounds as Roger Wallace's are those that we expect from Nashville but hardly we can get. I can call it modern traditional new country, with your kind permission. -WCMN, Spain |
